What is LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy?
while understanding the very real impact that transphobia, homophobia and biphobia can have on how LGBTQ+ people experience both their internal and external world.
How Does it work
Through the development of a trusting and reliable relationship with your therapist, sessions can offer space to explore aspects of your sexuality, sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Within an affirmative relationship, you can begin to make sense of your experiences, reflect on challenges, and consider new perspectives and possibilities for moving forward.
Who Is It For?
LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy is for anyone aged 16+ who identifies as:
- Lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, queer or questioning
- Transgender, non-binary, gender diverse or exploring their gender identity
- Asexual or aromantic
- In consensually non-monogamous or relationship-diverse partnerships
- Exploring or questioning any aspect of sexuality or gender
It may also be helpful for those who are not LGBTQ+ but wish to better understand and support a partner, family member or loved one.
What Issues Can It Help With?
LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy can support you with a wide range of concerns, including:
- Exploring or questioning sexual orientation or gender identity
- Coming out at any stage of life
- Internalised homophobia, biphobia or transphobia
- Experiences of discrimination, prejudice or minority stress
- Shame, self-esteem and self-acceptance
- Relationship difficulties, including relationship diversity
- Family rejection or strained family dynamics
- Anxiety, depression or low mood
- Body image and gender dysphoria
- Building resilience and a stronger sense of identity
Sessions are tailored to your individual needs, recognising that no two experiences are the same.
How Many Sessions?
There is no fixed number of sessions for LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy. Some people come for short-term, focused work (for example, 6–12 sessions), while others choose longer-term, open-ended therapy to explore deeper or more complex experiences.
Sessions are typically offered weekly and last 50-60 minutes. The length of therapy can be discussed and reviewed regularly to ensure it continues to meet your needs.
