Dr Katie Smith
Katie is an experienced and approachable Clinical Psychologist who is comfortable working with adults experiencing a broad range of issues. Examples of the kinds of problems Katie can help with include:
- Anxiety disorders including panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and phobias
- Low mood and depression
- Adjustment to health problems
- Body image and eating problems
- Interpersonal and relationship difficulties
- Low self-esteem
- Bereavement and loss
Katie is happy to work with individuals and couples where appropriate.
Katie will use her knowledge of a range of psychological models and theories to develop a shared understanding with you of your current difficulties (a formulation) and plan an individually tailored treatment approach. She has a strong background in evidence-based cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) including “third wave” approaches. In her work with clients, she will also draw on elements of interpersonal therapy, theories of behaviour change and psychodynamic theory.
After completing an Honours degree in Psychology in 1999, Katie went on to qualify as a clinical psychologist in 2003, completing her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Glasgow. Since then she has worked in a range of roles within the NHS. These have included outpatient and inpatient settings within adult mental health and specialist medical and surgical services. Within these roles she has supported people who have experienced common mental health difficulties along with those adjusting to chronic and life-threatening illnesses, providing one-to-one and group work, along with pre-surgical assessments and consultation. Katie also has expertise in supervision of psychological therapy, staff training, service development and improvement.
Katie is registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC number PYL 19641) and is a chartered member of the British Psychological Society, adhering to their Code of Ethics and Conduct.
